So what is everyones view - is swimming functional fitness?

My view is that it is - due in part to if you fall in water or someone else does you need to be able to swim - potentially harda and against strong current - and maybe carrying someone.

Second - does anyone include swimming in there workouts? I haven't seen anyone with any in their logs.

Sure is IMO.

Especially considering 70% or so of the world is water!

I have voted for "sure is - and i use it in my training" cos its actually something I've been thinking about doing.

Yes functional for the reasons you mention.

At one stage there was a decent vid linked on CF main site showing a helen style WOD in the pool.

21 Swings
12 Push Ups
50metre swim

3 or 5 rounds for time.

Helps if you're connecte or have a pal with pool access. The local authority pools generally not too happy with taking bells in. If like me you're near the sea then use that. Good fun in December/ Jan here in the North East. ha ha. :o

yeah - i remember that - was it not a military one?

Yeah - I am investigating open water locations but think it is getting too late in the year now to start that. Tabata at the pool will have to do although not sure if you would hear the gymboss!

Remember when that guy at the cert asked Coach what he'd include more of in the WOD if all the equipment considerations vanished? The first thing he mentioned was swimming, and how useful it is.

Must see if there's any pools around town that'll let us drag our barbells in for an hour some time.

I voted "sure it is and I use it" because there wasn't an option for Sure it is but I don't have access to a reasonably proced pool" ;)

Swimming is great work. I used to love the old Navy Seal workouts with swim PT. Swim 100 metres, 20 push ups, 20 sit-ups, repeat 10 times. Happy times ;)
Now it costs me a tenner to swim at the local pool for an hour or 70 quid a month for the globo-gym membership. Both a little excessive and not within my budget.

I said yes but in truth I haven't been swimming for a while. Did loads in September when I was in Turkey cos water was so warm!!! I tend to be a sea swimmer rather than a pool swimmer.

But yes, for a surfer its pretty functional!

well its the first thing my shoulder will be doing, so that's a yes from me.
"The idiots are self regarding consumer slaves oblivious to the paradox of their uniform individuality. They sculpt their hair to casual perfection, they wear their waistbands below their balls. They babble into hand-held twit machines about that cool e-mail of the woman being bummed by a wolf. Their cool friend made it. He's an idiot too. Welcome to the age of stupidity, hail the rise of the idiots!"

Charlie Brooker & Chris Morris.

"Don't get hung up on the stopwatch or times, or even weight lifted, think about technique, technique, technique and listening to your body. You will not perform better every session and that is set in stone. Test your self every month keep a written journal not just a forum, a place where you can keep personal notes that you can read to motivate yourself. Don't compare yourself to others when you are working out and likewise do not think that you are already fit as fcuk!!! As someone will always be in front and behind you, ultimate confidence in your abilities yes, but arrogance no, there is a fine line.
But most of all do the things you hate above the things you like or are good at, this will make you a better athlete. Save the things you like for recreational sessions. But ultimately enjoy it, even when you hate it! And finally remember the mind will always give in before the body!"

Here endeth the lesson.

life - swim or drown - definately functional

fitness/rehablilitation - nearly every muscle used - functional

I voted yes but like the others can't get anywhere to use it in a workout. Might look in to it a bit harder though.
I'm like a goddamn Navy Seal and Olympic gold medalist wrapped in a f***ing suit of body armour. I'm f***ing elite.

You could get one of these underwater MP3 players and I'm sure I've read on Ross's forum about people who have made mp3s that beep at certain time intervals.. Job done B)

Yup,combines stretching, resistance work for the whole body and cardio.
How could it not be,on some level,a useful activity for anybody?Regardless of their sport,or hobby,or even,in some cases, medical ailments.
Naturally,i'm around a lot of really good swimmers(i work as a lifeguard btw),and regular recreational trainers and even the recreational guys look like they are in fairly good general shape with good posture, relativly low b.f. across the board and generally quite fit averall.
The competative guys are in a league of their own though.Usually low b.f.,broad strong looking shoulders and seriously high lung capacity. Some of these guys swim flat out on about 1-2 breaths per 25metre length for up to 20 mins at a time continuously.Awesome swimmers.
