I think some of it is just performance anxiety, and getting worked up about beating your PRs. I used to get that a little, not so much anymore though.

But there's also the fact that pushing yourself to your absolute limits hurts, both mentally and physically (I wasn't right for about 24hours after my first sub-5 Fran). Fear of intense pain is a fairly sensible human instinct, which I we guess we just have to learn to suppress like all those other instincts that contrive to try and make us less fit...

I love pushing myself right to the edge. You learn a lot about yourself and what you're really capable of. It makes you feel alive!

Because I never, ever want to be a fat bellied husband to my fiance, or to be a fat dad / poor physical example to my daughter.

Because I'm a competitive person and I want the fastest time on the board.

Because when I hit a PB I buzz off it for the rest of the day.

Because when I don't train I resent it, get ratty and restless.

Because there's always something I can't do, either fast or heavy enough.

Because I see my mates at the onset of middle-age spread, slowing down and caring less, which makes me want to do more.

Because I've lived with WOD dread is an old friend.

(Reasons in no particular order)

That's more or less it for me. I get nervous before hard workouts, but it's mostly fear of not improving on the last time.

Because I saw a picture of me on the beach with a big ol' gut hanging out. The ladies don't like that.

I've set myself the goal of a 6-pack (or as near as heck as my frame can get to one) before I'm 30, so only 2 1/2 years to go. It's one of only a handful of things I've committed more than 10 minutes to and I'm determined to see it through.

Fairly shallow reason, but that's me!
No pain, no biscuits.

Because...

I don't want to be the fat kid anymore.
I can.
I want to be able to play with my kids when I am older.
I want to be able to do things better than the kids I coach.
I want to feel good about myself.
I get high on the endorphine rush.
I don't like getting old.
I like people thinking I am crazy in the gym.
I actually meet new friends and interesting people through training.
I want to push myself and constantly test my limits.
I want my kids to see me train and follow my example.
I'm vain.
I want to be better, faster and stronger than my peers.

and most importantly, because it's fun.

Pick one. On any given day any and all of these are true.
