Apologies if there's a link to this already (if so, please delete this thread Chet).
Let the debate begin...

Certainly up there, just surprised to see it on a BB site!!! The winds of change.

Bench Press though??? Now there's a question.
"The idiots are self regarding consumer slaves oblivious to the paradox of their uniform individuality. They sculpt their hair to casual perfection, they wear their waistbands below their balls. They babble into hand-held twit machines about that cool e-mail of the woman being bummed by a wolf. Their cool friend made it. He's an idiot too. Welcome to the age of stupidity, hail the rise of the idiots!"

Charlie Brooker & Chris Morris.

"Don't get hung up on the stopwatch or times, or even weight lifted, think about technique, technique, technique and listening to your body. You will not perform better every session and that is set in stone. Test your self every month keep a written journal not just a forum, a place where you can keep personal notes that you can read to motivate yourself. Don't compare yourself to others when you are working out and likewise do not think that you are already fit as fcuk!!! As someone will always be in front and behind you, ultimate confidence in your abilities yes, but arrogance no, there is a fine line.
But most of all do the things you hate above the things you like or are good at, this will make you a better athlete. Save the things you like for recreational sessions. But ultimately enjoy it, even when you hate it! And finally remember the mind will always give in before the body!"

Here endeth the lesson.

Never one to pass up the opportunity of a debate - IMO chest press - not functional. Yes, admittedly if you are trapped under a car then being able to push it off you would be helpful but in an everyday scenario with movements that we do, lifting, pulling and raising things above our head then I think not. If i'm honest, the only reason I do it is to gauge my strength. After years of doing chest press I just like to know that I can still left heavy on that exercise.

I question the exclusion of deadlifts and squats. I think these should replace some of the snatch variations as I think some of the list is filled up with exercises which could sort of be in the same group just done a slightly diff way/diff equipment.

Agree with Will completely. Deadlifts are one of, if the not the most funtional movements out there. Even to squat something you first have to pick it up to get it at the right height. Would definately swop that iron thingy with deadlifts or even squats although there are OHS included.

This is what I would replace in the list:

Front Squat (in place of OHS)
Pull-ups (in place of Renegade Squat-Pull)
Romanian Deadlifts (in place of DB Snatches)
Bent Press (might replace with DB Bench Press)
....and the rest I would probably keep.....
Push Press
Turkish Get-up
Iron Cross
Olympic Snatch Lift
DB Swing

But saying all that, pretty much every exercise is functional

for me it would be:
(in no order)

-Deadlift
Lifting something to free someone/thing beneath
-Bench Press
Stuck under something (car/tree)
-Bent Press / Push Press
Pushing someone up to higher leve.
-Swing
Hard to explain
-Snatch
Hard to explain
-Bear hug farmers carry
Obvious
-Bicep Curl (isometrics)
Domestic stuff
-Muscle UP!
was going to put pull ups, and say to get over fences/cliffs etc? but i think the transition is just as important
-Tricep Kickback
lol =)

(do i have too much free time?)

soz to bring back an old thread, just thought i had some decent suggestions
Things i Need:
140KG Olympic barbell kit, Power or Decent Squat Rack, Dip Station, Manilla Rope, Sledgehammer + Tyre, Rowing Machine, Sled, Weighted Vest, Captains Of Crush, Sandbag, Rings.

I love the last paragraph in that article;

Quote

The movements above have been lost for many years, but I strongly encourage you to incorporate a few of them into your training program. Truthfully, these exercises haven’t been "lost" by everyone. Look around at some of the strongest and fastest athletes and you’ll find that these powerful movements are alive and well in weight rooms around the world. Do yourself a favor and bring a few of them into your gym, too.

Ya, just look at any CrossFit gym and you will see a load of these being done on a regular basis.

Hmm, still on the fence about the Turkish Get Up. I don't question it's validity as an exercise, just how truly functional it really is. It's not often I have to get up off the floor holding a weight above my head with one arm. The same exercise with the weight held at the chest or waist I could see being far more "real-life" functional but that's just me.

My list (in no particular order) with some examples of real-life use;

1: Deadlift - picking up pretty much anything heavy
2: back Squat - pushing the car/moving furniture etc in addition to lifting weight
3: Shoulder/Push Press - putting things on (and off) a shelf
4: Clean and Jerk - moving anything heavy overhead
5: Muscle-Up (ring AND bar) - loads of applications in addition to climbing over a wall
6: KB swing - lifting objects to a low shelf/table, having fun with the kids, throwing objects
7: box jump - getting out of the way, jumping an obstacle, jumping for a ledge etc
8: Farmer's walk - either db's at the side or clasped in front of the chest. Multiple every day application
9: burpee - Burpee? Yep, burpee. I see it as a breakfall straight into getting up and (maybe) jumping out of the way. Very useful in a fight situation IMHO.

I was under the immpression that t.g.u.s were all about increasing shoulder stability and general core strength.
I agree with the original ones on the t-nation article.Pretty decent selection and not a curl in sight :)
