Looking to buy my first kettlebell(s)..

Got a few thoughts and questions - I'm looking at you, Davie.... ;) ;)...I hope you don't mind answering them.

But anyone else with any constructive input - please answer too :D

Was going to PM but thought it would be beneficial to stick it up on the forum.

I'm looking at any KBs I buy as an investment to be used with/by future clients too (have almost completed Level 2 just now...and that is just the beginning ;) ;))

1) I know you mentioned that the Intense Fitness ones are the best you have ever used - what makes you say this?

2) There is a link to "Inexpensive Kettlebells" on the site - on the off chance, do you know what makes these less expensive? If not I'll give him a shout.

3) What do you reckon with regards to which weight(s) to chose? I've only messed about briefly with KBs in the past, and that was ages ago, so I have no idea what weight would suit me now. I'm thinking 16kg might be a good starting point? I'm up for buying a set if I can get a decent deal...

4) Is there anywhere else you would recommend if looking for KBs that are still decent quality, but as inexpensive as possible?

Cheers

If you're coming up here in a couple of weeks Chet, you can come to my gym and try the kbs to get an idea of weight. I reckon 16s are probably good. I use 8s for a warm up, and 12s or 16s for other stuff, so you'd prob start with 16s I reckon.

Davie - did you ask Stan why his are unusual weights?

I have loads of the Newitts ones - about 20 ranging from 4kg up to 32kg. I got them long before I got involved with Stan and they are cheap. But for a reason - they are CAST iron. This means that they will, eventually break at the handles because no matter how careful you are you will at some point drop them. I cant comment on the inexpensive ones from Stans as I don't have any of these, give him a bell if you want any info on these.

The other ones that Stan sells are are hand made from steel and will never break or chip. This is what you are paying for - a quality piece of kit that will last a lifetime

As for starting weight I would recommend a 16kg to begin with. When I first got into kettlebells I got a 24kg and this limited what moves I could do because I simply wasn't strong enough - I could swing it, deadlift it etc but when it came to snatches, bent presses and some of te more complex moves a 24kg was WAY too heavy.. If you look at the video I posted in my trog from yesterday, you will see me failing miserably at a Sotts Press with a 25kg. If you get a 16kg that should be more to begin with - then move up to a 20kg or a 24kg.
You are a MAN... take that Zone diet and throw it back at Sears and tell him "f*** you, I'm eating food without counting it". Embrace the 200+ pound range, bro, hug it...

I did Nicky just off te phone to him - they are old Scottish weights not Russian ones.

And Chet, the Intense Fitness ones are the best as they have the best handle size and the bell sits very comfortably on your arm ( the handle is right height)

Ooh, cool; I can try yours! Think it's too late to put some on my Christmas list, but they could go on my birthday list - it's March so better time of year anyway for kb-ing in the garden.

And ones that don't bruise your wrist when you clean them sound great!

Have asked Santa/Dad for a 16kg KB for Xmas :)

Don't think I could have got away with asking for the Intense Fitness one :P

So its one of the Newitts ones this time.

Its coming tomorrow but I wont get it till Xmas day...how frustrating, hehe ;)

Boxing Day will probably be taken up by all manner of kettlebell nonsense - perfect really, cos the gym will be closed....

Easy Tiger ;)

(Sorry Nicky, couldn't resist, besides - someone had to comment on your reply :D)

Martin

As a side note, I reckon you could have a mighty game of conkers with KBs if you ever got bored - just an idea :D

Having learned how much I love DB snatching, i'd like to buy a kettlebell. Or maybe two.

Similarly to Chet, would 16kg be a good starting point? I like the look of the newitts ones because i'm a poor student and they look slightly more affordable.

I've just ordered a 16kg KB. I can't wait to start taking chucks of plaster out of walls with it.

Just remebered this.
Was in the wee local museum a few days back with the kids and guess what i found in all the "ye olde market"stuff"
A 52lb and a 16lb BRASS kettlebells.
Apparently cast,but,who cares,they're brass.

Mine came this morning while I was on the treadmill.

I opened the door to the TNT guy who must have been freaked out by my sweaty vest. Or not. It was hard to tell from his laconic disposition.

He dropped the package inside my door and said "It's heavy. I don't know what it is, I think it's parts or something". I debated momentarily on whether to explain what it was but deduced it would lead to more questions that neither of us would really care to engage in, so I said "Thanks" and signed his paperwork.

Can't wait to use it in today's Chet-Con.
