What is the instructor's name in Kent?

Hi
He's called Spence, though I'm not 100% sure if that's his fore or surname.

It's his first name (last name is Duffy). He's a good guy and was Kent police fire-arms so he usually knows what he's talking about. He was on my Instructor course last year so I'm glad to see he's teaching now.

Tell him Stephen said hi.

He says "hi" back at ya.
He'd been wondering who the spy in the camp was ... ;)

He tells me you two enjoyed beating each other so much that you stayed together for most of your instructor training. Interesting way of making new buddies!

He's thinking of bringing you in sometime to join one of our sessions. That would be very cool.

I know I've only been to a couple of sessions so far, but I'm really enjoying it. I just hope I can continue to afford it!!

Dear All,

We believe that the price of what you pay for something reflects the level of training you receive. We (The Institute of Krav Maga) are the largest club in the country with the most qualified Instructor team. We offer over 22 classes throughout London and the South East. All of our training is structured, all of the instructor team attend weekly update training and are continually developed to deliver the best training possible, to that end out prices are higher than that other clubs and we add more value to your training.

Our view is also that how much you are willing to INVEST IN YOURSELF, will dictate how good you become at whatever it is you are trying to achieve! In the early days, the founder members of the Institute were travelling to Poland and Israel reguarly to further their training.

At the Institute, you are not paying for just a class, you are becoming a member of the largest club in the UK, which has over 500 dedicated members. There is a big difference here to that of an Instructor who 'charges at the door' to whoever wants to come along on that night...which in turn does not help the development of anyone. Or in turn who offers just unlimited classes, some of which may not meet your needs or follow a structure (not saying that yours don't!). Those who sign up to out unlimited package, very rarely take advantage. But those pay the same price for, say 8 lessons per month, are then driven towards the RIGHT classes for them, rather than just any!

The perception of EXPENSIVE, is simply in the mind of the person who is paying for the training, to some people in this world, a ferrari is expensive, to others not! It is all about how much you value what you are paying for and how much you want it, and how much you want to get out of it.

Would you eat a burger prepared by Gordon Ramsey but expect it at the price of a Mcdonalds burger? Is there a clear difference? Would you enjoy one more that the other?? :)

As an example, the very few people who have commented on price have then admitted to spending twice that amount of alcohol every month....something not quite right there! However, they clearly value the consumption of alcohol higher than fitness/krav maga training. Nothing wrong with that if that is what they choose but to us that would not make sense.

To that end, the minimum £60.00 a month that we offer is for premium quality service, no less! (20% of which is VAT :))

Best regards

The Institute of Krav Maga UK.

Hi Institute of Krav Maga UK.
Thanks for taking the time to reply directly
(I didn't know you were lurking here ;) )

I don't want you to think that my posting a question here was in any way underhand - I simply wanted to get an independent picture of how your pricing sat in the context of other groups.

I guess I could refer you back to your own analogy.
I'd certainly go for Gordon Ramsay's burger over a McDs and happily pay more.
But I've eaten lots of burgers over the years, I know what I like and I know which would be better for me, so making a choice is easy and informed.
I don't have this depth of knowledge for KM, so that was the main reason for my post. I was just hoping someone could help me make the judgement.

To answer the question of value, I guess I'm happy to continue eating the IKM UK burgers as long as I can.
I know already that I like your burgers... I just hope you turn out to be the Ramsay variety and not McDs :D

Thanks again for taking the time and effort to pen a response - I appreciate it.

Cheers
Moose

By the way, I should point out though that I don't spend that amount on booze in a year, never mind a month - maybe I should change my priorities ;)

Moose,

We lurk everywhere! :)

Your point was completely valid and was a reasonable question. Our main point was that so many people complain about price (regardless of service) but then go and spend the equal amount/or more on something that is bad for their health and could be construed as a waste of precious time however, as I said that, is choice!

Most Krav Maga clubs charge between £40 -£50 per month...with an Instructor team with the level of Krav Maga (and other) experience, plus an client support team..we feel that the extra £10.00 a month is valid. We are also a limited company, and operate completely above the line for tax purposes (of which some Martial Arts Instructors do not I am told) which includes being registered for VAT (so the actual price of 4 lessons per month is (£48.00) per month.

In Kent, Spencer was selected due to his level of experience and teaching ability and he has alot to offer for a very long time.

It's good to see people comparing clubs, very few clubs will take an interest in what their members say...however, to us, it is the core of what we do. Listening to members and providing the highest level of service.

Regards

The Institute of Krav Maga UK

Agreed, I don't think anyone was saying it wasn't worth the cost, it's just good to know what else is around. I might buy a Ferrari, but I'd sure as hell test drive it first and see what else I could get for a similar price or even look at something at a lesser cost that meets my needs: I wouldn't buy a Ferrari if all I wanted to do is drive to the shops and back. If you don't find out about these things, you will get taken for a ride - and it won't be a luxury sports car doing it ;)

And as some of the comments seemed directed at my replies (as the only one that actually goes to a class), my comment on not being a member for long was more a commentary on my finances - as you say, perception of the expense is in the wallet of the payer and I just couldn't afford that per month, even if it was Eyal teaching me personally. I know you guys do good stuff but I think the wife would hang me ;)

Anyway, Moose, glad to see you are enjoying it. Krav Maga is (in my opinion of course) a great system to learn and would recommend it to anyone. Jon and Joe (I'm making the assumption that Jon posted above, forgive me if I'm wrong) are top instructors and you'll do well with them and their team.

Oh, and I second the comments about Spence, the guy knows his stuff and is a great instructor with years of experience teaching the firearms guys.

Quick update.

Sad to see the Institute have just announced "fantastic" new changes to their pricing.
Not fantastic for me unfortunately.
New pricing incentivises folks who train as often as possible (fair enough), but penalises those who - like me - can only train once a week (1x/week rate of £60/month and unlimited rate of £70/month have now been rationalised to a flat rate of £67/month).

I've missed a few sessions recently through work - a very expensive thing to do already.
£60/month was already a stretch for 1 session per week. £67 is going to be VERY hard to justify, especially as I know I'll have to miss some future classes for work. I know that swapping sessions is allowed/encouraged etc.., but I signed up on the understanding that I can genuinely only make the 1 session I signed up to.

This is already quite obviously a good club, with a great instructor. I'm not happy at the thought of potentially having to quit.

As I'm the only person who trains 1x/week in Kent, I'm trying not to take this personally...

Would love to join you for this - but I'm not around next Tuesday. :(
You're a long way from home, but I'll see if I can rearrange some stuff to see if I can make it for the following week (and ongoing)...if you'll have me...

If you can make it, you're more than welcome to join. I'll even waive the induction as you have experience ;)

First induction last night. Only two attendees, but we all start somewhere. Really good session and both signed on for regular classes which is great.
Going on a flyer blitz this week to drum up more interest for the August induction.

I start my KMG (formerly IKMF) instructor course on Saturday. 9 days in September, 9 in October and 6 in November. 10 hour days with one of the top instructors from Israel so no cake walk :)

Not sure on how "flowery" it is - the black eye I'm sporting right now would suggest not so much :D

I just started with Paul at Krav maga bristol - i second the cakewalk thing - Bruises on my forearms and a footprint on my chest We do CrossFit too which is a def bonus in my book.

:blink:How much ????

Thats hellish expensive - I pay £35 a month in Weston super mare for Krav Maga. British Krav Maga Association see if they have any sessions near you. Have you tried asking for a discount for once weekly training ?

Have you tried MMA or anything else at that price ?
James
