Got a KM class that runs quite close to me. Having not experienced it before, I have a rough idea about it (wikipedia :D) but I was just wondering whether it would be worth going? Anyone here practice it?

Alright Bud,

These are the 2 websites for Paul from CF Bristol, don't know if thats near you or not? But if you want any info on Krav, then this is the man.

Pauls Krav site

CrossfitBristol
"The idiots are self regarding consumer slaves oblivious to the paradox of their uniform individuality. They sculpt their hair to casual perfection, they wear their waistbands below their balls. They babble into hand-held twit machines about that cool e-mail of the woman being bummed by a wolf. Their cool friend made it. He's an idiot too. Welcome to the age of stupidity, hail the rise of the idiots!"

Charlie Brooker & Chris Morris.

"Don't get hung up on the stopwatch or times, or even weight lifted, think about technique, technique, technique and listening to your body. You will not perform better every session and that is set in stone. Test your self every month keep a written journal not just a forum, a place where you can keep personal notes that you can read to motivate yourself. Don't compare yourself to others when you are working out and likewise do not think that you are already fit as fcuk!!! As someone will always be in front and behind you, ultimate confidence in your abilities yes, but arrogance no, there is a fine line.
But most of all do the things you hate above the things you like or are good at, this will make you a better athlete. Save the things you like for recreational sessions. But ultimately enjoy it, even when you hate it! And finally remember the mind will always give in before the body!"

Here endeth the lesson.

A friend of mine does it. He raves about it. I had a nosey through the book written by the KM 'guru' though - complete tosh! I'm sure the practical bit was probably good, but it was full of little nuggets of 'wisdom' that were complete crap. They guy obviously fancies himself as Guru krav maga, wearing robes and dispensing wisdom to his adoring fans. Plonker.

That's not to say it isn't a good thing to learn though. Just ignore the 'spiritual' bit. ;)

Thanks for all the info so far guys. I will, Chet. I have been meaning to get back into Martial Arts for a little while (I did Judo at Uni). In an ideal world I would like to do something that encompassed all aspects of MMA, so striking, grappling and BJJ etc but there isn't much around my way. But this KM thing popped up, and so I thought it might be worth a shot.

I looked into this about a year ago and never did anything about it. Yet again I came across it just last week. There are no regular classes here. There is a 24 hour course though split over 2 days or else over 12 evenings. I was thinking of signing up.

Edit: Hmm...just found another place that does it. Looks like proper classes too.

Been doing KM for about 10 months now and I love it. Simple to learn yet hard to master and is a practical form of self defense. No forms etc, just hard and fast on what to do in a given situation.

I train in Reading which is the closest school to me (30 miles or so), but the instructor is the highest graded teacher in the country so it's worth the travel time.

I did it for a while in Derby and really enjoyed it. Your forearms get battered though! Mine were black, blue and a lovely shade of yellow by the end of the first week!

Had to quit because it was a bit of a trek from my house.

Lets face it, you'll pass out before you die.

Currently it's at the Madejski Academy on Tuesday evenings. Details of the organisation can be found Here (WFS).

I really should come over to Reading to workout with you at CrossFit Reading in the near future.

Cf Surrey do BJJ and MMA classes. I dunno where you are though so whether or not thats useful to you. I've done MA pretty much my whole life jj since I was about 5 and then kickboxing and kung fu from about 15.

Stopped them now and gonna start going to the BJJ and MMA at CF as they some sort of package and its cheaper that way. Basically can't get enough of them and there loads of fun if you have the chance to do it definatly give it a go.

we have just started training it and it's really popular. The studio is central london and does 1:1 and class sessions. I haven't tried it yet but one of the PT guys did and he is hooked.

I start my KMG (formerly IKMF) instructor course on Saturday. 9 days in September, 9 in October and 6 in November. 10 hour days with one of the top instructors from Israel so no cake walk :)

Not sure on how "flowery" it is - the black eye I'm sporting right now would suggest not so much :D

A Krav maga class officially starts in Kent today.

From the demo/induction I went to on Saturday, it all looks good, and the group running it seem to be legit and above board (KMG - see Franz' last post).

I'm wondering about their charges, though.

£60/month for 4 sessions a month seems pretty steep to me - even compared to CrossFit.
(or £70 for 8, £80 for 12 or £90 unlimited; though at the moment there are only 8 possible sessions in Kent). For all the years I did karate, I never paid more than a couple of quid per session, and that was with excellent instruction.

Is this normal for Krav Maga?
I feel a bit like I might be getting ripped off here...
...or am I just tight?

Cheers

The club I train at charges 50 for unlimited classes; used to be 45 for 4 classes a month and 50 for unlimited but they did away with the once a month band to simplify things. I had no idea the Institute of Krav Maga were so expensive until I looked on their site just now (and have to say, at those prices I doubt I'd be a member for long ;)).

I know the instructors at the Institute are good, but my instructor is the director of the KMG in the UK and is the highest graded instructor in the country so that can't be the reason. Still, IKM has a load of members so they must do something right.

Once the baby is born and I start up my classes, you are quite welcome to come over here for a "tester" session if you want to see if you think it's worth the money.

Thanks for that - I thought they seemed expensive, so thanks for confirming.

Like you, I'm not sure I can justify stumping up that kind of cash for long (and when the missus notices, I'm done for! :o ).
I've signed up for a month at least - and I really enjoyed the first session last night - but I'll see how it pans out. It's a shame but I don't think I can maintain it long term.

I guess they can charge what they like at the moment as they're the only KM group in Kent, and I'm too far from London to trek up there. Your instructor's rates sound a lot more reasonable - if only he was closer! You couldn't persuade him to open a club up over this way could you ;)

And I'd love to help you try out your new instructor skills once you're ready :)
