Franz (or anyone else with experinec of this)
the missus has been training for a half mara up until recently but has developed some pretty bad knee pain which meant she had to pull out of the event. she went to see the doc who reckons she is going to need surgery to fix it. she has been referred but is really worried about the surgery. I'm just looking for some info about what is entailed and what the side effects are. She is specifically worried about anethesia during the op, will she be able to go back to running, what other treatment will she need, will there be any scars, is there a high chance it will just re-occur if she goes back to running. I'm sure she'll get some answers from the consultant dude when she sees him but just wanted to see if i could give her any good news stories to calm her down, or if bad news to start thinking about alternatives to running for example.
cheers

Arthroscopy has minimal scarring; it's keyhole so there may be some small circular scars but mine are pretty much gone (and if you use that bio-oil stuff it's even better apparently).
My first arthroscopy was to clean out some torn cartilage. I was in for the day and was back in the gym the following week and was running a couple of weeks later. In the interim I was doing closed circuit low impact routines like rowing and cycling to stay in shape. Subsequent operations were to repair an ACL tear. Again, I wasn't in over night and was back working out within a month.
Running wise, I haven't had any problems in the knee since, and squatting causes absolutely no problems, but of course I'm not sure what the issues are in this case so the consultant is the best person to ask.
Knee surgery has come a long way since the days when the whole knee was opened up and is a whole lot less invasive.
Tell her good luck with it.

Cheers bud - I'm sure that'll be some comfort to her.
It sounds like cartlidge problems (meniscus tear?)

Yup, my first was medial meniscus. Routine op now and real quick.
Like Greg says - what about the shoes? We all know what too much padding in the heel does to the knees.
