Afternoon guys & girls,

I have spoken with York Fitness re: the rubber bumpers. They are happy to work with us to get a good deal on the bumpers so I need to get an idea of numbers from whoever is interested.

If you are interested could you let me know how many and of what size. Also might be helpful to get your post code so I can check out how much delivery will be.

Will be speaking with them about bars etc. also.

Let me know

Andy

Dunno... I'd like to get a barbell and some plates at some point, so maybe... how much though? I've absolutely no idea how much they cost, as I haven't looked into it.

I also haven't thought much about what sort of bar to get - I'm guessing a 7' oly bar would be most people's choice, but I wondered about a 6' one from the space point of view - and I'm not exactly likely to be needing to get 4 plates on per side or anything am I?

And re the bumpers - are we talking those black rubber things, or the coloured ones? I like the coloured ones from a purely aesthetic point of view! I've never actually used them. My gym have got normal metal plates; that's all I've ever used.

comments/advice, anyone?

Nicky

Not sure on price at the moment. check http://www.yorkfitne...-487/Index.html for original pricing.

Will be going back to him with amount that people want and arrange discount from there.

If you are seriously interested then I can put your name down as interested just need to know what weights and numbers. I will be speaking about bars also.

From listening to other people these york bumpers are the best on the market. Don't damage so easily and you can throw them around.

Let me know

Cheers

Pencil us in for 2 pairs of 10kg plates (I'm guessing they don't do lb denominations)

Confirmation will depend on cost

Shipping to DH2

Cheers, kempie

They look good - and cheaper than York. I've decided I want coloured ones (cos they're pretty) and ones with the gaps for gripping them. And a 6' bar. Do 6' oly bars still weigh 20kg?

The coloured ones are cheaper than york as they're not solid rubber-they have a metal core with a rubber/composite coating-they can split when dropped or dumped-the ones with gaps can also break when this happens. Theshorter bars wont weigh 20kg, Hampton make a very nice 5ft bar which weighs 14kg. Mine cost a fortune but I do think they are worth it and they should last forever too

Ta. I'll have to give it some thought. I don't tend to drop the bar unless I have to, so I'm not sure that I need the more expensive ones. It wasn't on my urgent list so I haven't really looked into it much yet. I'll have to do some searching around and decide what I really want/need. I could possibly get more expensive 10kg plates as these are the ones that'll get most use, and cheaper 20kg ones. Or something.

I'm thinking of getting a 20kg oly bar and some weights together... any suggestions on a decent supplier for the oly bar?

Do you get different ones though? I mean the standard 20kg oly bar... they've all been the same whichever one i've used.

the good one I have has ball bearings in the ends so they spin really well which is good when doing cleans. the others just have a big old allan bolt holding te ends on - like most bars really. I'll have a look around and find some for you and PM you

What would be the best for starting out with? A bar and 2x20?
Cheers Eugene

I might be wrong but i think the best bars have needle bearings rather than ball bearings.
I have a York needle bearing bar - very good and is dropped a lot with no ill effects.

If you're splashing out on decent bumpers you need a decent bar - I think my one was about £120. The Ball bearing ones aren't designed to be dropped although your experience of these things is greater than mine - I believe the sleeves can come off and the central screw needs constant tightening.

As for starting out I would go with lower plates - bar + 4 x 10 maybe plus a heap of fractionals (if you can get yourself to York at Daventry they have a cut price corner - I picked up some rubber encased 5's and 2.5's for £1 a kg as new). That way you can do the progressions easier for all the lifts - thinking specifically about the snatch - if you just try to do a 60kg snatch from the start you're gonna get hurt!

Daventry's not too far from me... now there's a thought!

My latest thinking is that I should get a decent bar and 10kg & 5kg bumpers, and then get cheaper plates for the 20s and smaller ones.

With the 6ft bar, is the middle bit the same length as the 7ft bar - ie is it the end bits where you put the plates that are shorter? or a bit of both?
