Strongman and functional fitness
Brian Cuninghame, of Unit 20 Strength Gym in Edinburgh, understands the advantages of strongman training for the functional athlete. He’s been in the game for years.
Which is why when we spoke about the Strength and Power Meet, which of course is based on the same principles of spreading the enjoyment and benefits of strongman training, he was keen to get involved:
“We wanted to sponsor and support the CrossFit Reading Strength and Power Meet, in Association with FK.UK, as we believe that strongman/woman training can be very functional as well as fun. It’s not just a sport for 150kg monsters, and we are keen to open the doors to people of all levels and abilities.”
Brian co-runs Unit 20 Strength Gym, and realises access to strongman equipment and expertise is not easy to come by – so is eager to embrace the functional community and spread the fun and functionality of the sport of strongman. He also appreciates that functional athletes share many of the same sentiments, desires and frustrations about where to train – so is keen to open his doors to all strength and power athletes:
“Unit 20 Gym is situated on the north west side of Edinburgh, and has been established since 2007. Whilst we cater largely for the strongman community, we are also well equipped for functional training, powerlifting, and weightlifting. With 24/7 access via electronic keypad, we welcome members of all levels who prefer a more ‘spit and sawdust’ type of gym to the other gyms Edinburgh and surrounding has to offer. We have equipment ranging from atlas stones, farmers walks, tyres, kettlebells, power cages, free weights (including bumper plates), and logs.
