Strength and Power Meet 2010: S.P.E.A.R.

One of the best parts of these events, for us, is seeing communities from various backgrounds and discplines get involved together, learning from each other and encouraging each other like old friends – which is testament entirely to these functional fitness communities themselves.

By definition, functional fitness comprises of a number of different disciplines, that share a common ground and a common mindset. However, it is all too uncommon to see experts and high-level practitioners from a number of disciplines combine in the one space for shared events and experiences.

Which is why we are delighted to announce that Safe Space Gym will be providing a demonstration of Tony Blauer's Personal Defence Readiness – The S.P.E.A.R. System at the CrossFit Reading Strength and Power Meet (in Association with FK.UK), on 5th June.

Safe Space Gym joins Parkour Foundations to stimulate the minds of attendees of the Strength and Power Meet, during the lunchtime break. Nothing like variety!

General functional fitness and The S.P.E.A.R. System share a common ground in functionality that enhances daily life. Some of you will have already seen some of Tony Blauer's (the founder of the S.P.E.A.R. System) videos posted on CrossFit's main site. Coach Greg Glassman talks about the importance of having basic life giving skills, such as being functionally fit, being able to swim and having some basic skills in self protection.

We train in functional fitness to support the demands of life. The ability to protect yourself may be one of those times when physical fitness, tactical skill and mind-set are required.


What is S.P.E.A.R. ?
Here are a few words from Zeb Glover, Director of Safe Space Security Services Ltd, about exactly what the S.P.E.A.R. SYSTEM is:

The S.P.E.A.R. SYSTEM (Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response) is a scientifically researched & medically reviewed personal defence measure that exploits the body?s natural responses to violence and danger. This survival mechanism, dubbed: Startle-Flinch Response has been scientifically integrated into a series of neuromuscular drills that teaches individuals how to convert their instinctive reactions into protective and combative tactics and solutions. Because the system is “Genetically wired and behaviorally inspired?”, anybody can learn it and everybody can do it.

The S.P.E.A.R. System applies physiological research to help reduce reaction time during confrontations. Classical conditioning is used to blend two dynamic
forces:

1) the speed of the flinch response
2) the power of extensor strength.

By using the kinetic energy created by a startle/flinch response and the cross extensor reflex we can improve close quarter position. The S.P.E.A.R. then becomes a bridge to your style or system (complex motor skills) and will not interfere with your current training system or skill-set.
