There are numerous valid perspectives on the origin of the sport known today simply as Strongman. We can go back practically to the conception of mankind to find examples of human beings challenging themselves and competing against others in quite arbitrary yet impressive feats of strength.

The bible is strewn with the strength feats of characters such as Samson and Goliath. The ancient Romans and Greeks clearly also engaged in strength competition, unsurprisingly given that these civilisations are generally regarded as the cradle of modern sport.

Realistically though there are a few key direct ancestors of modern strongman: circus strongman shows, Highland Games and the Odd Lifts.
