Greg,

Why don't you continue with your gym or as you say do something yourself and get others to join you? Another option could be to get a decent PT or Strength Coach to give you an overhaul in the program/technique department??

As for prices etc- if they are getting people who are willing to pay that, then that is obviously their target market and it looks like a great facility!!

I do think they are hitting people with the wrong message with dedication to serious training and having to pay £90 a week for it- that isn't my version of being dedicated (training on your own and busting your ass when no one is around watching is true dedication...)

Greg, if your ever down Newport way mate I will be running the "I AM" club on a Friday night, room for 8 only as I have a small studio- payment in sweat and tears of pain (and joy at the end)...lol

Good luck to that gym though- looks great, just hope they are as good as they say they are

First chance I have had to look at this.............. WTF.... £90!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As stated, nice place, I would love to have it. However I have found through my dealings with other coaches etc over the years that too much time and money is spent on Gucci kit, and the coaches choose style over substance to help with their lack of knowledge and ability, I am not saying that this is the case with these guys, it is just what I have come across over the years.

I can get someone fit and strong with a rock and log, an indoor astro turf prowler run!!!! FFS, thats a nice to have when you are fully at the top of the pile. I would just like damp free walls and some more rubber matting!!!!

However who are the idiots? The coaches or the clients for paying it? And if they are prepared to pay it, then good luck to them.

It seems like the 'Functional gym world' is starting to suffer a little from the globo disease of making everything nice and shiny with comfiness built in!!!!
"The idiots are self regarding consumer slaves oblivious to the paradox of their uniform individuality. They sculpt their hair to casual perfection, they wear their waistbands below their balls. They babble into hand-held twit machines about that cool e-mail of the woman being bummed by a wolf. Their cool friend made it. He's an idiot too. Welcome to the age of stupidity, hail the rise of the idiots!"

Charlie Brooker & Chris Morris.

"Don't get hung up on the stopwatch or times, or even weight lifted, think about technique, technique, technique and listening to your body. You will not perform better every session and that is set in stone. Test your self every month keep a written journal not just a forum, a place where you can keep personal notes that you can read to motivate yourself. Don't compare yourself to others when you are working out and likewise do not think that you are already fit as fcuk!!! As someone will always be in front and behind you, ultimate confidence in your abilities yes, but arrogance no, there is a fine line.
But most of all do the things you hate above the things you like or are good at, this will make you a better athlete. Save the things you like for recreational sessions. But ultimately enjoy it, even when you hate it! And finally remember the mind will always give in before the body!"

Here endeth the lesson.

I am glad this thread came up. I am opening in Inverness very shortly and am at a loss at what to charge???!! I have worked out that I need two people per class (initially 6 per week) to pay the rent and petrol costs to get to gym. My situation is slightly different, as I am continuing to work full time just now,but offering 2 classes on Mon night...same on Thursday and 2 on Saturday morning. What kinds of deals do people work with on here? Andy for instance?

I own a studio in London which has olympic lifting platforms, drive sled, simulated tug of war etc. I am trying to make pricing good for everyone as I agree some facilities with top kit are a rip off. The classes are £15 for most with Krav Maga being the most expensive at £20. Personal Training with a top level training is around £50. The facility is central London - near Liverpool Street (www.ignitept.co.uk)

Once again I am in complete agreement with Mark. JHC- some of the best training sesions I ever had, and ever coached, were with very limited equipment and facilities. Too many toys= compensating for lack of coaching ability and imagination. Rock, Log and somewhere to run is more than enough- pay for the expertise of the coach- not for the "mortgage" on all the gucci toys.

My situation is slightly different, I am based in a small town in the Canadian Rockies [circa 20,000]......my training is all outside during the non winter months [and inside when the temperatures drop below -6 and there is snow on the ground....mind you the other week we trained outside and there had been 8 inches of snow overnight....that was interesting :) ]......my charges are the following:

$20 Drop in rate [$180 for a block of 10]

$150 unlimited sessions per month [we have up to 4 sessions per day to choose from]

$100 for 2 workouts per week, per month

The initial bootcamp is $250 for the 4 week workout month.

we don't have gucci equipment, we use sandbags, KBs, body weight, rocks and logs have also been utilised....playground equipment.....

The town is not 'rich' by any standards......but I ensure I give quality coaching throughout.....and the clients recognise this [there are 3 'normal' gyms and one 'crossfit certified' gym within the town limits]

Hope this helps with idea of pricing

Have a great one.....

Really interesting thread. I live in Stockport and have been down to the facility in question and had a free trial sesh. The guys who run it seem like good guys, seem to know what they are talking about and have plenty of equipment but I wouldn’t call it Gucci. Sandbags are home made etc..

Anyway, had a free session there and it was a good workout but it wasn’t really anything outside what you would expect from a good CF affiliate. We covered things like weighted press ups, bear crawls, prowler pushes, rope pull ups and Russian KB swings.

They do not coach the O-lifts but use other similar movements as they are the first to say that they are not oly coaches. I personally think this is great coming from a coach as I wouldn’t want anyone to teach these complex skills given that they themselves don’t have a great understanding of them.

However, for £90 per month for one session a week I would expect my coaches not to have any holes in their skill set.

Just my 2p’s worth….

Hiya mate! Yeah, doing great thanks, how about you? Injury cleared up thanks to a mixture of kettlebells, laying off the rings for a while and LOTS of soft tissue work.

Interesting Reading the comments about price,
Ive just opened a functional style of studio in Basingstoke and we charge £49 a month to attend as many group fitness training sessions with a personal trainer as you like (we run approx 4-5 a day)Some of the comments i have had from people is that its too expensive when you could join a normal gym for that, i always counter this objection by saying that you wont actually get results at a normal gym, but you will at our studio.
We dont allow people to just come and train whenever they want, they can only attend the group sessions, and changing facilities are pretty basic but i think its still good value to train with a PT everyday if you like in a bespoke fitness studio (all be it in small groups, not 1 to 1).
Im interested to hear whether people think this is good value for money or not?
To see exactly what we are offering go to www.groupfitnesstraining.co.uk and have a look at our video.
Thanks in advance for your honest feedback!

Honestly not being able to train when I wanted would be frustrating and a utter turn off, likewise I would have no interest in participating in group training, nor with a personal trainer, with the exception of if I wanted to take up olympic weightlifting or something.

I'd pay a fair whack a month for a gym with several power-racks, bumper plates, ropes, tyres etc, however I find the crossfit gyms unappealing, not least because I don't do crossfit, but the emphasis on the group work means that I'd be restricted to when I wanted to use the facilities (Just a note, I'm not referring to all crossfit gyms, just the few that I've read up on out of interest)

I would love a group gym local that only charges 50 quid for unlimited group classes. None of the Globo's round here are less than 80 pounds PCM and they are all totally impersonal with minimum wage "personal trainers" that know nothing.

this is very similar in pricing to our facility in watford on the out skirts of greater london (where you would expect things to be pricey), we charge £45 per month for general membership, members pay an additional £1.00 per group session, non members can also turn up and train for £5 pay and train or £3.50 for a single class, we offer a free trial session, to see if you fit in with our methods, we also offer full 1 to 1 specioalised sessions with a dedicated strength and fitness coach............we have an exceptionally well equipped gym, but its a "no frills" establishment with no fancy changing rooms, just the bare essentials............we are a totally WYSIWYG "NO BULL" strength, performance and conditioning centre http://www.newspartangym.co.nr is the website and our video is on second page.......... we have areal "old school" feel too

i met up with a US based crossfit affiliate last year and their centre chargesnearly $500 per month ............. now thats pricey!!!
tears MAY get you sympathy, but guts WILL get you results

just to echo what's been said - I wouldn't join any gym where I couldn't train when i wanted to. Having said that I've been a garage gym-er for a few years now so it would take something major for me to join any gym.

i'm training at a crossfit gym in holland at the moment, it's a bit of a change, but i'll be interested to see if i can train better/improve my performance compared to training by myself like I usually do

price is €57.50/mo for unlimited sessions, though it probably costs me much more than that in transport costs :S

speaking to the owner though i can understand why prices can be so high, if you only have 20 or 30 members you aren't going to really have much of an income, especially if you have the place kitted out to a high standard
