Squatting is a very natural movement for humans. However our sedentary lifestyles and lack of practise of this movement as we get older means that the movement can become more difficult.

Many people therefore find they have to re-learn how to squat and it can seem daunting. People are afraid to put weights on their back because they are not confident in their ability to execute the movement properly.

But it is not a difficult movement and this article will take you through it step by step. We deal with the back squat in detail first and then look at the front squat.

nothing new for me, but good clear article. Didn't rippetoe write about 90 pages on the squat

is there any stretches i can do to help keep my elbows high at the bottom of a front squat?

skin the cats and dislocates are what i currently do, plus general stretching and limbering up :)

It'll get better over time. One thing you can do is set up a bar in the rack at the height of the bottom position and use it isometrically to push against. I do something similar in the jerk position to stretch my shoulders back.

Load the bar with a weight you could not possibly front squat, but could hold in the rack for a few seconds...hold it, then repeat a few times. Remember to roll it right back to your fingertips, Works a treat for me.

It is!

Love doing these. Make a great finisher to a squat workout too.
