I recently got made redundant from my office job, so I've just been doing as many hours in my part-time job as possible, lifeguarding at a private school, but I'm hoping to get into the military in September. In the mean time, I was thinking of becoming a fitness class instructor, but don't really know how to go about it. I had looked at the gym instructor qualification, but it's a bit expensive for me at the moment. As I work at a school and am also a Scout leader, I should have enough availability to make it worth doing full-time, but don't know where to start. Anyone here know much about this kinda of stuff?

It depends on what classes you want to teach.

Most class teachers have a REPS level 2 qualification either down the exercise to music route or a Fitness Instructor with Circuit training included.

If you are going to teach make sure you are insured. For this you will need a qualification. Try something like YMCA, Premier Global, Future Fit, etc.
