Smith machines Keeping up with the Jones...or not

Anthony, the resident training expert on Mansized has just posted the following in a discussion about the smith machine:

"There is no outcome that a properly designed free weight only routine can achieve better than one that uses machines.
..
Unless you have a bias, a Smith Machine overall doesn't offer any more or less than a barbell. "


This just makes me want to cry. How the hell do you respond to someone who truly thinks this?

It's like someone being absolutely convinced that the sky is green. It's very difficult to explain that it is actually blue, because they just don't see it that way.

Where is this lad coming from? I wonder and what "outcomes" he's talking about? It should be easy to compare strength, get someone with a 120kg smith squat and make them do a real one, then get someone with a 120kg real squat and see what they can do on a smith and compare. The same should apply for the press and bench etc. Depends on what he's looking for though, I presume you can get "the pump" from a smith if that's how you judge the effectiveness of something. Aside from that, I have no idea, maybe he's just wrong!

Trouble is, go to any of the "approved" PT courses and that is exactly the type of rubbish you are taught. Unfortunately too many people go to these courses and never think to question the instructors, even after the course and after "real world" experience. You just can't make people see if they insist on wearing blinkers.

I guess at least we can beat him to death with the free weights for such stupidity - machines might be too heavy for that task! :devil:

I used to use the smith machine relentlessly during my 3 sets of 10 routines of bench blah blah.

Never use it now, but I did see in a fitness mag a 'Jones' machine that moves backwards and fowards as well as the upward movement. Never used it, but I reckon it would closely mimick a true movment better than the normal smith machine.

Even if the gym had one I wouldnt use it.

functional trg all the way for me from now on.

i tried one out once, just felt weird and is sill no substitute for a free weights

smith type machines are weird, as they introduce friction and resistance into the game, which makes movements feel awkard
