Hey Red, is there any chance you could forward to myself also as a teacher I'm keen to see some ideas on how to implement functional fitness in schools.

Red (Julie) was very kind to reply to my email.
Thank you again
I am looking into it.
What does everyone think is the basic equipment needed to take to a school to perform most of the kids/teens WOD's? My idea is to be mobile and to take the equipment to them (also utilising the equipment they have)
The list i have so far is
PVC piping x 20 approx £1.70 each from b & q
Skipping ropes x 20 approx £6 each
2 sets of rings £30-£40 each set
kettlebells? 2's, 4's, 8's, 12's. (need to price up)
I imagine most other things would come either from school or from what i have already like a few med balls, etc.
Any other ideas?
Thank you again

hello mate,
if you are going for 20 ropes and pipes i take it you are lookign to have 20 participant. If that is the case i'd skip the rings if you only have 2 pairs. wouldn't be time efficient as you wouldn't keep their attention long enough to wait in line to have a go. Use the money for some agility ladders or hurdles. Fundamental movement is as much a key element as things like the squat and core development. think of bits of kit that will be fun in a game scenario. You will be able to work some conditioning stuff but it's always good to end with a game of some sort to keep them happy and interested (depends what age i suppose) i used bean bags or sponge balls for things like dodge ball. the bean bags add another element as they would have to throw them along the floor and if it hit their feet then they would be out until next person brings them in.
think core development more than anything else. Strength before conditioning for the first 5-6 weeks and then add in funky exercises.
Just my take on it bud but sure red will have a lot to offer aswell

Cool. I have some SAQ stuff already. Bungee chords and belts, ladder, evasion belt.
Work(Total Fitness) has some hurdles I could borrow. I also have things like reaction balls, boxing gloves and pads. Good idea about rings. Maybe better for adult classes where they may be more patient.
I am starting a pilot Functional Class at Total Fitness (for adults). Basically a circuit class but using the tried and tested functional movements and we will be implementing crossfit style WOD's with score cards etc. I am hoping if it takes off the gym will let me put a kids class on too, maybe after Christmas.
I have got to tell the gym what I want ordering. I have initially said some skipping ropes, pull up bars on walls. We dont have these in studio. We have punchbags, steps, med balls, etc plus kettlebells and weights from main gym. I can also drag in a rower or two.
I have been teaching my Boxercise class 1 major movement per week as part of the warm up. We have done things like air squats, overhead squats, deadlifts. Trying to get some of them to actually buy in to it is sometimes hard. They expect to run around the room touching the floor for 10 mins then put the gloves on and box the pads/bags. Hardly any of them could perform a full squat or lunge with a lordotic posture. Unbelievable. Press ups arent much better.
