Superb, I will get kipping practice in then just in case.

Out of curiosity, how many people on here can actually do a 'muscle up'? I have never tried one but gonna get down to local gymnastic club and give one a go when got my chins/kips upto standard.

i've not managed a ring muscle up yet, though i put that down to not being able to find a good location to practice...

bar muscle-ups are fairly straight forward, though i'd like to make them a bit smoother

I'm guessing....maybe around ten of the regulars? (I'm not one of the ten!). If we are including bar muscle-ups, which I think we should.

Thank the lord. I thought I was one of the few never done one.
I wish there was an Affiliate near me. I emailed Crossfit Manchester twice but got no reply. I think Newcastle nearest after that, 2 hours away.

whereabouts are you based?

there's 2 places in manc now, plus there is probably a few non-cf-affliated functional fitness type places around

I am in Wakefield. It is between Leeds and Sheffield so anywhere between the two would be great.

The muscle up is a party trick move buddy don't get too hung up about it!!!! Its all about the grip, 99% of you have the strength to do it!!!!! As Chet discovered after long and frustrating attempts, we met up, sorted his grip and BOOM Mu!!!! And then there was no stopping him... Its on vid somewhere??? Crossfit have placed it on some kind of pedestal and it has developed a holy grail mythical status that it does not deserve

And even many of the CF coaches have not done one!!!! Which I find odd as it is a signature move!!!!!
"The idiots are self regarding consumer slaves oblivious to the paradox of their uniform individuality. They sculpt their hair to casual perfection, they wear their waistbands below their balls. They babble into hand-held twit machines about that cool e-mail of the woman being bummed by a wolf. Their cool friend made it. He's an idiot too. Welcome to the age of stupidity, hail the rise of the idiots!"

Charlie Brooker & Chris Morris.

"Don't get hung up on the stopwatch or times, or even weight lifted, think about technique, technique, technique and listening to your body. You will not perform better every session and that is set in stone. Test your self every month keep a written journal not just a forum, a place where you can keep personal notes that you can read to motivate yourself. Don't compare yourself to others when you are working out and likewise do not think that you are already fit as fcuk!!! As someone will always be in front and behind you, ultimate confidence in your abilities yes, but arrogance no, there is a fine line.
But most of all do the things you hate above the things you like or are good at, this will make you a better athlete. Save the things you like for recreational sessions. But ultimately enjoy it, even when you hate it! And finally remember the mind will always give in before the body!"

Here endeth the lesson.

I had never heard of kipping pull ups or muscle ups until a few months ago when I discovered Crossfit. Most of my PT clients struggle with the standard chin/pull up. I was pretty good at em until my bicep tendon injury. I got 21 in 1 min at the Gladiator trials last year. My mate, Ian Duckett did 45 pull ups straight off last week. He is only about 10.5 stone though with 6 inch arms so that must help. Still pretty good going. he reckons he can do standard pull ups just as quick as kips. Has anyone timed a comparison in something like fran?
I managed to do a scaled fran today for the first time. i used a band for my pull ups and although struggled through, my bicep held up.

Once I can master the pull ups again I may get some kip/muscle up coaching. I am due to go to Crossfit London in 3 weeks. I have also been in contact with Simon at Crossfit Central Manchester. I will pop across there too shortly as there are no such boxes in Yorkshire as far as I can see.

there's a video somewhere of them comparing standard kipping and butterfly kipping, not sure if they included strict pullups.

I agree with Marks statements. MUs are more of a showmanship movement. Don't get me wrong they are a great upper body strength exercise and alot of people think you need to be really strong to do one. NOT the case, its all technique. The main problem people have is getting the shoulders forward quick enough to get into the lower dip position. Once you can do this the rest is a piece of cake.

personal thoughts...I love them now i can do them, But i would love to be able to do them without kipping.

I have now got to the stage of being able to do 13 without stopping or re-gripping, my next goal is to try to get under 5 minutes for the 30 MU WOD (p.s. Not showing off here if anyone things I'm being big headed :) )

i managed a couple of single afterwards. tried for two in a row but i was a bit worn out.

it's mostly technique i think, I can do them no problem from bars, with rings it's just getting the kip right, especially at the transition

Nice one; Love the huh-yuuuge grin on your face when you come down.
I still can't ring MU for toffee. Kills my elbows. bar MU's are easy and I can get 1-3 ring MU's if I try but then my arm is useless for a day or two!

like the vid mate, looks like you could have done a few more reps there bud. I remember putting a vid on you tube a while ago. Didnt have the straight arms at the bottom figured back then. daughter videoed it, cant see the feet, but i promise there was no jumping involved.

looks good, seems like most of the power is coming from upper body too.

i'd love to be able to do these slowly from a dead hang :D

MU's are easy when you know how - if it hurts your elbows you're doing it wrong. I'm with mark though - if you can do dips and pull ups then you are getting everything you could out of a muscle up really.
