Hi guys,
I've just put in a 2,500m rowing challenge (which I would love to see you have a go at)

I'm bringing another challenge to the fore to see whether you are truly functionally fit. In the next week or two see if you can swim half a mile (i.e. 800 metres or 32 lengths of a 25 metre pool). The whole swim must be done freestyle and should be timed. I'm gonna have a go in the next couple of days.

GOOD LUCK!!

Any reason it has to be Freestyle? Being functionally fit means I could do the distance if I have to (if I fell off a boat or something) but surely the swim would be more along the lines of "just complete the damned thing any way possible so I don't drown" :D

I would imagine other strokes may make it less taxing to do the distance but maybe adding a timed component to your challenge could be a way to balance things out. If someone can complete the challenge using breast stroke then that would still be OK, the times would be slower so it would even out.

Just my 2c. If I can get to a pool I will try this one out for you.

Oh ok. I made it freestyle as it is the most metabolically challenging (after butterfly and man drowning stroke). I had a swimming lesson last summer as I was frequently doing the man drowning stroke and that one lesson made swimming 'manageable'. I'm still pants but I can do the thing. Anyhoo if you're crap it's a hell of a workout!

Along the Tyne of course. Better have a Typhoid and Cholera jab before the off.

Funny you should mention that I've got to have all my jabs again soon as the 10yr limit is nearly up. There is loads- I'll look like a voodoo doll swinmming along the river. Joking apart though, in a couple of months the sea will be ok in wetsuit.

when I swam a mile (only did it once) I used freestyle I found this was the easiest once I got into the "zone".
